Feeding the horses for courses

In another recent post we mentioned cars being specifically designed and optioned for their intended market; in the previous case it was Fiat in India, but they’re certainly not the only ones. OEMs and component suppliers are quickly realizing that market requirements differ around the world, and success will come from meeting local needs.

All well and good, but supplying different equipment to different markets can also raise costs and reduce manufacturing efficiency, and occasionally a vehicle is priced right out of its intended market by all the add-ons. Thus, while everybody wants to sell in a growing market – India’s new car sales grew more than 30% last year – internal costs must still be managed.

A recent announcement from Denso shows how some new technology is allowing that company to keep a lid on spiraling costs. They say they are now making four different heat exchangers for the Indian automotive market using 70 percent fewer material types and some other improvements.

The company says it assessed the needs of the Indian market, determined product specifications, and also evaluated India’s local and widely available materials. The result is that Denso is now making new radiators, heater cores, condensers and evaporators using those locally sourced materials and, additionally, does the manufacturing on a single production line. Elsewhere, the products would each be manufactured on a separate line.
Conventionally the two types of tubes – either hollow for radiators and heater cores, or pressure-resistant with a corrugated internal structure for evaporators and condensers – were produced by separate machines due to the difference in the tube’s structure. Company engineers made improvements to the forming machine and that allowed forming two different kinds of tubes with one machine.

In another recent post we mentioned cars being specifically designed and optioned for their intended market; in the previous case it was Fiat in India, but they’re certainly not the only ones. OEMs and component suppliers are quickly realizing that market requirements differ around the world, and success will come from meeting local needs.

Between the consolidation of materials and the streamlining of production, Denso says they have seen substantially lowered costs, which of course helps keep the price of the Toyota Etios within reach of Indian consumers.

We say finding a way to handle two very different types of tube on the same line is a clever bit of management and engineering. Don’t be surprised if you start hearing similar news from other places  soon.

When having your mobile A/C system professionally serviced, insist on proper repair procedures and quality replacement parts. Insist on recovery and recycling so that refrigerant can be reused and not released into the atmosphere.

As a part of DENSO Corporation, this is one of many design measures utilized on the global market. Corporations will need to adapt to the local suppliers and availability of raw materials to use feasible designs.
