Update on Japan’s automotive market

Continuing our brief trip through some official statements and news reports on the web sites of the Japanese auto industry.  The situation changes by the day as hidden damage is discovered or repairs are completed.

• GM resumed production of the Chevy Colorado andGMCCanyon   at the Shreveport,La.Plant last week. The related engine making facility inTonawanda, N.Y. is also back to work.

• Chrysler has restricted overtime work at its plant in Ontario,Canada due to parts shortages.

Mazda is not accepting dealer orders for vehicles made in Japan until further notice. The edict affects many popular models.  The company has restarted limited production at two plants in Japan.

• Volvo has said that it can continue production through roughly the middle of April, but cannot predict anything beyond that. The company notes that 8-10 percent of their components come from Japan.

• Toyota told its U.S.dealers that more than 230 parts will be in short supply for at least a month, and that certain restocking orders will not be filled. Damage to a battery plant in Japanmay affect Prius availability here.
In Japan, the company has reopened most factories, although the Miyagi assembly plant remains damaged and is still lacking some needed utility services. All plants operating will run at reduced output until at least May. Availability of Corolla, Prius, Yaris and other popular models may be affected.

• Ford reopened itsLouisville, Ky.truck plant this week after a week’s closure due to parts shortages. Ford continues to restrict orders for certain truck and car colors as the paint pigment originates in Japan. Ford of Europe also reopened a plant in Belgium this week.

• Honda has cut output at several North American plants and suspended orders for Japanese-built cars and trucks. The company says two Japanese plants have resumed vehicle production at half-capacity, and parts production has also resumed at a reduced volume.

• Nissan is investigating whether itsTennessee engine plant could supply V-6 engines toJapanto cover closure of the damagedIwakifacility. Although Nissan plants are now running after brief interruptions, the Japanese plants will run at half-capacity until May.

 

 

When having your mobile A/C system professionally serviced, insist on proper repair procedures and quality replacement parts. Insist on recovery and recycling so that refrigerant can be reused and not released into the atmosphere.
