The Mid-Atlantic Green Operator (GO) program, sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Regional Air Management Association, Inc. has announced a program to provide truckers working at the Ports of Virginia, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Wilmington, Del. a grant of up to $15,000 towards a newer and cleaner vehicle.
The clean air program is jointly funded by the EPA’s Smartway Transportation program, the ports themselves, and several large businesses and chains that receive goods through the ports. A truck owner, including carrier companies, shippers, terminals, ports, retailers, and non-profit organizations, may also qualify for a low-interest loan program to cover the remainder of a replacement vehicle’s cost.
Described very briefly, the plan is targeted primarily at owner-operators – the group that tends to keep older vehicles in service longest – but everyone’s invited to apply. Preference will be given to those taking pre-1997 models off the road, although units through 2003 will be considered.
All vehicles must be Class 8, street legal, licensed, and registered for drayage use at one of the participating ports. You must have owned the truck for at least one calendar year.
Once approved and entered into the program, the owner has to buy a 2005 or newer replacement vehicle and scrap the old one. The port plan is being administered though the Environmental Finance Center at the University of Maryland. Full details at http://www.efc.umd.edu/cleandiesel.html.
When having your mobile A/C system professionally serviced, insist on proper repair procedures and quality replacement parts. Insist on recovery and recycling so that refrigerant can be reused and not released into the atmosphere.
