“R-1234yf design and service considerations”

Change is coming with the recent U.S. and European introduction of the new A/C refrigerant, R-1234yf.  This session will provide the knowledge you need now to begin preparing your business and educating your customers for the future.  You’ll learn why R-1234yf was selected, when and where it was introduced, and the importance to you of the contributions of the many organizations that supported its development.

Equally important, you’ll gain an understanding of the properties, performance and unique chemistry of the refrigerant, and learn where to go for additional information.

Jim Baker served Delphi as a senior staff research scientist in the corporation’s advanced systems group. He was inducted into Delphi’s Innovation Hall of Fame, the company’s highest recognition for innovation, in 2004. While at Delphi, Jim was responsible for developing future refrigerant systems for vehicle air conditioning. After retiring from the company, he now serves as an industry consultant.

He has also served as a contributing member on a number of technical committees, and has been involved in development and implementation of the technology to recycle refrigerants on-site in repair shops, the conversion from CFC-12 to HFC-134a, and facilitating the development of a new class of lubricants to enable HFC-134a’s use in mobile air conditioning systems.

Tim Craig has a 23 year career with Delphi and has held positions in systems design and development, HVAC module design and development and program management. He is currently working in Delphi’s research and development group focused on alternate refrigerant and advanced systems projects.

Tim received both his masters and bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. Tim is an active member of both MACS and the SAE Interior Climate Control Committee, as well as a longtime member of ASME.

When having your mobile A/C system professionally serviced, insist on proper repair procedures and quality replacement parts. Insist on recovery and recycling so that refrigerant can be reused and not released into the atmosphere.
